Sulyap sa Nakalipas
Antiques Village

In a small stall deep in the passages of Tiendesitas sits an unassuming portal to Philippine history. Old music plays quietly from the only modern item in the room- a radio. Everything else comes from a period many have seen only in pictures and their parents' minds.

Sulyap sa Nakalipas is a passport to this world: cherubims and karitela lamps hang gracefully on the walls, Catholic saints of wood and ivory stand guard inside glass casings, indigenous potteries sit beside a gramophone and rare long-necked dama juanas. Carnival glass, 17th century beer bottles and gorgeous jewelry of beads and precious stones are just some other treasures waiting to be unearthed inside.

Most distinct of this little shop's collection, aside from the beautiful Nene Saguil artworks-is a 1940's cash register that functions perfectly. In fact, as the gracious shopkeeper Roland explains, everything from their 1960's electric fan to their 1940's telephone is in working order.

The shop's most popular artifacts come in the form of furniture-heavy Narra and Hindalo wood work from different regions. As with authentic pieces of antique fixtures, these benches and tables possess no nails. Roland says that being in the business with shop owner Gil Castro for so long has equipped them with the ability to distinguish reproductions from originals.

Their items come with a price tag of P5,000 and up, but as any antique lover knows, the value of some old things could be priceless.
